Exhibition project 2005

In addition to the visual productions mentioned above, the closing exhibition in Cologne in 2005 will examine the cultural practices of migrants, as well as on their forms of expression and strategies for survival from the 1950s to the present day. In order to do so, the points where local consumer habits and niche economies intersect will be examined in a way which presupposes that those involved mutually influence and transform existing social structures. In this way, objects, products and the migrant economies related to them will not simply be "described", but "staged" by being compared to a representation of the rational behind the border and its control mechanisms, as well as of the people involved.

As conceived thus far, the 2005 exhibition will focus especially on locations where migration occurs and becomes visible: from the German living room to the EU border post, from the computer terminal of the SIS (Schengen Information System) to the late afternoon soaps in Greece – and in other places, the migrants’ local "markets" and neighbourhoods, the pictures in police stations and Europol, and the images of the migrants’ journeys themselves.

The exhibition is part of <Projekt Migration>, an initiative of the German Federal Cultural Foundation (Kulturstiftung des Bundes) in collaboration with DOMiT e.V. and the Kölnischer Kunstverein.
