transnational europe I

migration across southern/eastern borders
International Symposium
University of Crete, Rethymno (Island of Crete, Greece)
21. – 24. 10. 2004

Outline

transnational europe I focuses on the formation of a new Europe of borders and migrations. This focus implies a shift in perspective: What is usually considered the periphery of the European Union – its southern and eastern fringes – has become a centre of transnational mobility, a hotspot for the movements of migration and Europe’s attempts to control it. The former regions of recruited emigration to the North and West have now become zones of global immigration and transit. On the geopolitical map of western hegemony, Europe is becoming bigger: by enlarging and empowering its border regime in the South and the East. On the map of migration tactics and imagination, however, Europe is down-sized and de-centred by becoming a province of global pathways expressing and demanding freedom.

transnational europe I invites researchers, activists, and artists to explore and discuss the formation and the non-/representation of this new Europe as it emerges from the dynamic interplay of borders and migration movements. What does – and could – Europe look like from such perspective?
